AMaze'n Margaret River

Our Story

Creating a hedge maze is a labour of love!
Here is how it all started…

Russell and Cathy McKnight purchased the A Maze’n property in late 1986 while on holiday from the Goldfields. The property consisted of 40 acres; 10 acres of which is native bush, the rest being neglected and unkempt land with broken down fences, sheds, chook houses and sheep runs. The paddocks were overrun with tin, barbed wire, broken bottles and weeds.

After a couple of years of extensive planning and approvals to plant the hedge maze, in mid 1994, Russell and Cathy moved from the Goldfields to Margaret River with their young family. Slowly over time, with perseverance and the help of their children, everything was cleaned up.

By Christmas that year the 2000 plants were in. Rabbits were a huge problem for the first couple of years, every evening dislodging a couple of hundred plants. Night after night after night.

Russell continued to live part time in the goldfields, travelling back and forth, as well as starting a business in Margaret River in 1996 – Margaret River Rootstocks, a grapevine nursery, specialising in grafted table grapes and rootlings for local and Eastern States vineyards.

In the meantime, the establishment of the gardens, other mazes and outdoor games and puzzles continued. Around 2007 the decision to hasten the project was made. Final preparations for the café were made, detailed landscaping and plantings were prolific. Mid 2009 saw the completion of the café, together with shade and bbq structures and gas bbqs.

Finally, Christmas 2009 the maze and gardens were open to the public, 15 years after planting. The grapevine nursery was closed. The first few years were very difficult. Opening on the GFC, then the fires in 2011 in Margaret River did nothing to attract tourists.

Four years later the 18 hole mini golf was a great addition.

Currently we have a team of 5 gardeners tending the grounds. The hedge maze takes a few months to hedge requiring specialised care. We continue to plant unusual and beautiful species of plants, attracting bees, birds, butterflies and marsupials.

We consider ourselves very fortunate to live in such beautiful surroundings.

A few comments from our visitors...

"Must go.
You can easily spend an entire day here. The maze is a REAL MAZE which was great. Enjoy the botanical garden on your way as well as the huge outdoor games. There is a playground and picknick area. We didn't eat but everything looked lovely.

"This place was AMAZING!!!! Sooo worth how much you pay to get in. The maze is actually challenging and the gardens (and the games in the gardens) are both beautiful and a lot of fun."

"A great day out with the family. So many fun things to explore and the beautiful maze! The cedar trees that created the maze was nice as it felt comfortable and not claustrophobic. It was just the right amount of challenge. The Cafe had a great burger and selection of ice cream for the kids."
